The 2026 Argentine Triple Crown: The Road to the Most Anticipated Polo Season
Every year, the arrival of spring in Argentina marks the beginning of a very particular period in the polo calendar.
The best players, horses and organisations in the world return to Argentina for the most demanding part of the season, where every match carries more weight and every tournament adds another chapter to the history of the sport.
The 2026 season begins on 22 September, when the 133rd Hurlingham Open gets underway, before moving through Tortugas and eventually reaching the final stage at Palermo on 12 December.
For fans of La Natividad and La Natividad La Dolfina, this year's season carries even more anticipation. The organisation enters the Argentine campaign as the defending Triple Crown champion, after completing an unbeaten 2025 campaign and winning Hurlingham, Tortugas and Palermo.
But 2026 also brings a new format and a new group of challengers.
A New Chapter for the Triple Crown
The Argentine Association of Polo has confirmed eight teams for the 2026 high-goal season.
La Natividad La Dolfina returns as defending champion, joined by Ellerstina Indios Chapaleufú, La Hache Polo Team, La Ensenada, Las Monjitas, Híper Polo Club, Haras San Pedro and Don Ercole.
The season also introduces new faces to the highest level. Las Monjitas returns to the competition after seven years away, while Híper Polo Club and Haras San Pedro will make their debut.
There is also an important change to the competition structure. In 2026, teams coming through the classification process will participate in Tortugas as well as Palermo, increasing the number of matches played during the overall season.
The result is a longer and even more demanding road towards the final at Palermo.
Hurlingham: The Season Begins
22 September – 3 October 2026
The 133rd Hurlingham Open – The Ayrshire Cup will open the Argentine high-goal calendar on 22 September, with the final scheduled for 3 October.
Hurlingham occupies a unique place in Argentine polo history. It is one of the country's most traditional tournaments and the second most prestigious competition in the Argentine calendar, traditionally preceding the Argentine Open.
The tournament is played without handicap, meaning matches begin at 0-0 rather than receiving goals based on the difference between the teams' ratings.
For players and teams, Hurlingham represents the first major test of the spring season.
After months of international competition, horses and players return to Argentina and begin adapting once again to the rhythm, fields and intensity of the local calendar.
For La Natividad La Dolfina, it will also be the first opportunity to measure the defending champions against a new season of challengers.
Tortugas: The First Triple Crown Challenge
6 October – 7 November 2026
The 86th Tortugas Country Club Open – Copa Emilio de Anchorena follows almost immediately, beginning on 6 October and culminating in its final on 7 November.
Tortugas has traditionally been the opening jewel of the Argentine Triple Crown, and in 2026 it becomes particularly important within the revised competition structure.
The tournament brings together the highest-ranked teams and offers one of the first major opportunities of the season to establish momentum.
The Copa Emilio de Anchorena has been awarded since 1907 and remains one of the most recognisable trophies in Argentine polo.
For the players, Tortugas is where the season begins to accelerate. The horses are already settled into their Argentine routines, combinations become more defined and every chukker begins to feel increasingly important.
Palermo: The Final Stage
10 November – 12 December 2026
Everything eventually leads to the 133rd Argentine Open, which will begin on 10 November before reaching its defining moment on 12 December at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo.
Known around the world as the Cathedral of Polo, Palermo is the final stage of the Argentine season and the tournament that every player dreams of winning.
The competition brings together the strongest teams in the country, with the final played in front of one of the largest audiences in international polo.
The ultimate prize is the Argentine Open Championship Cup, one of the most coveted trophies in the sport.
It is also the stage where the history of the season is ultimately written.
The Defending Champions
The anticipation surrounding 2026 is naturally connected to what happened last year.
In 2025, La Natividad La Dolfina completed an extraordinary unbeaten campaign, winning Hurlingham, Tortugas and Palermo and becoming the Triple Crown champions. In the Argentine Open final, they defeated Ellerstina Indios Chapaleufú 17-13.
The achievement was particularly significant because the organisation brought together two of the most influential polo families of the modern era.
Adolfo Cambiaso, Poroto Cambiaso, Camilo "Jeta" Castagnola and Bartolomé "Barto" Castagnola formed a 40-goal team that dominated the season.
The four players also entered 2026 carrying an impressive collection of experience. According to the AAP, Cambiaso has won the Argentine Open 19 times, while Jeta and Barto Castagnola each entered the new season with four Palermo titles.
More Than Three Tournaments
For someone discovering polo, the Triple Crown can appear to be simply a sequence of three tournaments.
But the reality is much more complex.
The Argentine high-goal season is a long process of adaptation. Players must manage horses, build combinations, respond to injuries, understand changing conditions and maintain their level across several months.
A team can be exceptional in one tournament and struggle in the next.
That is what makes a Triple Crown so difficult to achieve.
It is not only about winning a final. It is about maintaining excellence throughout an entire season.
What to Watch in 2026
The defending champions will enter the season under a different kind of pressure.
La Natividad La Dolfina will be the team everyone wants to beat, while Ellerstina Indios Chapaleufú returns after finishing runner-up in both Tortugas and Palermo in 2025.
At the same time, the return of Las Monjitas and the arrival of Híper Polo Club and Haras San Pedro add new dynamics to the competition.
For the spectators, this means a season with familiar rivalries, new teams and an enormous amount of uncertainty.
And that is precisely what makes the beginning of the Argentine season so exciting.
The Road to Palermo Begins Now
The 2026 Argentine polo season will unfold over almost three months, moving from Hurlingham to Tortugas and finally to Palermo.
Along the way, the world's best players will compete not only for trophies, but for something much harder to define: a place in the history of Argentine polo.
For La Natividad La Dolfina, the challenge is clear. After an unbeaten 2025 and a historic Triple Crown, they return as the team to beat.
For everyone else, the objective is equally clear: stop them.
The first chapter begins on 22 September.
The road to Palermo is about to start.
